Important Travel Update for UK Guests: New EU Entry Requirements for Winter 2024/2025

Planning a ski trip to Les Gets this winter? If you're traveling from the UK, there are important changes to be aware of regarding entry into France and Switzerland, especially for those flying into Geneva or driving via the Eurotunnel.

What’s Changing?

Starting from November 2024, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will be in place for all non-EU travelers, including UK nationals. The system will require biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, to be collected at the border when you enter or exit the Schengen Area, which includes both France and Switzerland. This replaces the manual passport stamping system.

Additionally, from mid-2025, UK travelers will need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) before traveling, which will cost €7 and be valid for three years.

What Does This Mean for Your Journey?

  • By Car (Eurotunnel/ Ferry): EES biometric checks will be completed before you depart from the UK at terminals like Dover or Eurotunnel Folkestone. Plan for additional wait times, particularly during busy travel periods.
  • By Train (Eurostar): EES checks will occur at St Pancras International before boarding. You may also experience slightly longer queues as biometric data is processed.
  • Flying to Geneva (or Other Airports): For those flying into Geneva, EES biometric checks will happen on arrival. Ensure you allow extra time when passing through customs before catching your transfer to Les Gets.

What Should You Do?

  • Arrive early at your departure terminal to accommodate potential delays.
  • Make sure your passport is valid well beyond your travel dates to avoid complications.
  • Once ETIAS is introduced, don’t forget to apply online before traveling to avoid being denied entry.
